Catch A Game With a View Over Lunch, Dinner, or Drinks

Marquette, Michigan – As the elevator doors open we’re greeted by the heartfelt shouts and laughter of the lively crowd of sports enthusiasts occupying every available table and chair of the 906 Sports Bar & Grill. It’s a Thursday evening, Interactive Trivia Night and folks are happily yelling out answers over drinks and baskets laden with pub fare, while the evening’s sports events play out on the variety of screens mounted in every direction  providing views of the games from any seat in the room.

Not an unusual scene for a sports bar but there are 2 things that make the 906 Sports Bar & Grill unique among others, in a town that worships sports action. For one, the tall windows stretching upwards towards the high ceilings of this historic downtown building which hosts “the 906”.  No dark corners here, light spills in from two sides offering unique views from three stories up, of the lower harbor lakefront to the east and the setting sun over downtown’s westside.

The other feature that stands out is their attention to serving up fresh food. Kurt Ghiardi one of the 906 founders and manager, says, “Ultimately, we wanted to bring a fresh atmosphere to good pub style food.” Ghiardi goes on to explain that they use mainly all fresh ingredients avoiding pre-made fare in their kitchen. Hand pressed burger patties are fresh off the grill and most of the sauces and salad dressings are homemade in-house.

Combining some family recipes with a lot of trial and error in their own kitchens they’ve developed a 54 item menu full with sandwiches, soups, salads, wraps, fish fry, and some hefty burgers. As a nod to local athletes they’ve named all the sandwiches and burgers after U.P. high school sports mascots. There’s something for everyone from meat-lovers to vegetarians and the kids too.

Spotlight items include homemade soups which change up on a weekly basis and their renowned “Wildcat Burgers” a special stuffed burger that features 2 1/4lb beef patties stuffed with something different each week.  Says Ghiardi, “We like to come up with unique ideas that may sound crazy but will surprise you with great taste!”

Some examples include: stuffing with jalapenos and bacon and topped off with peanut butter or a version stuffed with ham, pepperoni, cudighi and finished off with homemade marinara sauce. More 906 favorites include the 906 Wings and fish fry and the pricing holds steady at $9.95 and under per plate.

If you’re bored by the games on tv there’s a pool table and dart boards to keep you busy between drinks from the bar and a dance floor keeps things going into the later hours of the night. In less than a year they’ve built up a happening scene and Ghiardi contributes this early success to their commitment to great customer service, a fun atmosphere, and good food at a decent price. Says Ghiardi, “You gotta stay patient. It takes a lot of time and work to make it happen but I appreciate the opportunity.”
