The smell of freshly baked bread fills your nostrils the moment you walk through the door, followed quickly with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. With your senses being evoked and awakened like that, you certainly cannot go wrong with a combination like that.

The daily newspaper is available at the front counter and the internet connection is strong, so that you can check out the day’s “goings on” without much additional effort.

Huron Mountain Bakery has been in business since 1996, and we should all be grateful for that. They carry almost any type of breads, donuts and baked goods. Their location on Front Street in Marquette makes it a convenient stop on the way to work, or to just take just a hop, skip and jump from downtown or the lakeshore alike.

Their flagstaff store in Marquette has approximately 20 staff members who are all dedicated to baking, preparing and serving everything from 11 different types of oversized muffins to over 16 types of bagels. There are a few booth spaces for patrons to enjoy their fresh-brewed Dead River Coffee and a pastry inside, or you can call ahead and place an order for pick-up.

My children and I started a Saturday morning ritual about five years ago; eating fresh muffins one Saturday morning a month. It’s really cute, they each get to pick and look forward to what kind of muffin they would each like (which is funny, since they ALWAYS end up going with chocolate chip; myself with a classic blueberry muffin or cranberry walnut).

When we moved up to Marquette last August, we began our search of finding a bakery in Marquette that could keep up with the quality from the bakery that we were accustomed to in Escanaba, where we’d moved from. Huron Mountain Bakery does exactly what it should; their staff is friendly, their facility spotless, the equipment new and the extensive menu quite impressive. And then there is the taste; muffins may seem hard to mess up, but believe me, we found other area bakeries (before finding the Huron Mountain Bakery), who were able to DESTROY a muffin. Huron Mountain has the secret down, though, the muffins are moist throughout and impressive to all of the senses, mainly the taste buds.

On our most recent trip to 1301 South Front Street, my son, daughter and I visited in search of a good bagel. We each sampled a different type- my daughter Emma tried a Cinnamon Raisin one with cream cheese, my son Gavin tried Garlic and Herb, and I had an Egg bagel with cream cheese. We each had a rich, creamy hot chocolate made to perfection by our server. Now they make a mean cup of hot cocoa, too, at Huron Mountain Bakery. Anytime you can go in and order a hot chocolate, you can always hope for a healthy dollop of whipped cream, and this visit did not disappoint.

The only downfall in visiting Huron Mountain Bread Company in Marquette may just be what so many other City of Marquette businesses are faced with; lack of parking. However, this spot is worth patronizing, so to wait for a spot is well worth it. Luckily for our family, they are located within walking distance of our home, so the parking is not an issue for us.

Whether you’re looking to surprise your staff with donuts one morning, or like to do what I do with my kids and our “muffin day” once a month, Huron Mountain Bakery fills that need. By patronizing this company, and other locals business like theirs, we are all ensuring that these places stay thriving and are fixations in our community for years to come.
