BRIDE AND GROOM SHOTS: WHERE TO GET INSPIRATION

Nature or in the city? At water’s edge or in the mountains? How do you decide on a location impressive enough for romantic pictures from your wedding day and how do you fit the location to your character together as a couple? A wedding photographer explains….

Indoors or outdoors? Traditional ceremony or alternative ceremony? To hold your event in the cool winter or dreamy summer night? And what about the dress, music, and food? To produce a wedding is not an easy process but what you always need to keep in mind is that everything starts and ends with you. Consider first what’s going to put a smile on your face and make you happy. That’s the way I approach my photography too!

I try to always know as much as possible about the people I’m going to photograph. In meeting with couples, in writing, and in the photography process itself I’m always asking myself who am I working with and what will fit their needs the best.

When the couple and I are choosing the character of the photography to be taken: I ask them one question: who are they? The purpose of the photographs is to capture the essence of them as a couple as they commit to their union. For example, are we talking about two quiet people that love the outdoors or a couple that likes to live in the fast lane? The answer to the question applies to all aspects of the wedding event. When considering how plan your wedding every answer is legitimate.

When people ask me where to take the most beautiful photographs of the bride and groom of course, I have no single answer. Begin collecting ideas and images of what inspires you. Sharing these ideas with the people you choose to work with will help them to better serve your needs. The sources of inspiration nowadays are endless. The internet offers us blogs and social networks that deal with every small part of a wedding event.

Think of the old cork boards with pin-up images hanging on the wall. Any ideas you have for design styles, clothing, photography, decorating, etc., can be grouped into separate inspiration boards and reviewed at any time. You can pull out your Pinterest profile and share images and ideas you like with whoever you’re working with.

Collaborating on an engagement photo session project with your photographer is a great way to work intimately together before the actual wedding day. A popular trend currently happening is “save the date” photos with the specific purpose of creating wedding invitations. Usually done as a simple and beautiful photo of the couple with the wedding date written into the photo scene itself (for example in the sand) these are a lot fun to do and often generate powerful ideas.

After a “save the date” type session a bond and trust are created that makes it easier to get those romantic shots on the wedding day between preparations for the event itself. It’s usually advisable to stick to the geographical area around your event. Whether it be a natural or urban environment there will be interesting colors and textures. Background is important but ultimately the focus should be on the couple and their connection with each other.

In closing there are a million ideas that can be done but most the most important thing is to make choices that celebrate who you are and your uniqueness. The pictures will do the rest and preserve the memories of your day for generations.
