Emerging Artists Shine at Peter White Library
Young talents from the Marquette area took turns in the spotlight during open mic performance.
Marquette, MI, March 6, 2014 – There was a great turn-out from the community as the Marquette Arts & Culture Center (MACC) hosted their monthly Evening of Arts and Culture giving an opportunity for emerging artists shine at Peter White Library.
The library was alive with arts and entertainment Thursday evening as two gallery opening receptions and a performing arts open mic show were all featured downstairs of the Peter White Public Library. The sounds of singing, dancing, piano, poetry and rock bands entertained a standing room only audience. Performers between the ages of 10 – 18yrs old took turns in the spotlight sharing their many talents.
Niikah Hatfield, is a multi-talented 17 year old homeschool student. Not only can she play a variety of musical instruments but she can also dance while playing! Niikah wowed the audience with a dance/violin performance during the show.
16 year old Charlie Edwards has been studying various styles of dancing since he was 10 years old. Experienced in contemporary, jazz, tap, and hip-hop he looks forward to attending college and teaching the art of dance to future generations. He performed a jazz dance piece to the song “Dancin’ In The Streeet” by Mick Jagger and David Bowie.
Pianist Amanda Matznick is 13 and has already performed on many occasions in the Marquette area during her 8 years of playing. Milo Birch (pictured in article header) also performed on piano during the show. At just 10 years old Milo is composing his own music, performing at various public venues, and has even recorded and released two albums: “Milo on Keys” and “Blend the Colors.”
18 year old Reily Chabie recited three pieces of poetry during the evening. Reily has competed a few times in the Poetry Out Loud competition winning this past January and will be competing in a statewide competition in Lansing later this month.
Shout out to the MFAK Ensemble who made their first public appearance performing two pieces for the Emerging Artists evening. We look forward to hearing great music from them in the future, first time is the hardest, keep it up guys! The Music For All Kids ensemble is part of a non-profit organization devoted to the advancement of youth ages five to eighteen through learning, applying, and teaching music regardless of a student’s financial resources.
The Emerging Artists event also included art show openings for two women artists in the galleries downtstairs of the Library.
The Main Gallery held an opening reception for painter Carolyn K. Snyder. The collection entitled “Visually Speaking, Three Points of View” will hang from March 4-28, 2014, features oil paintings from three separate series of work from landscapes, self-portraits expressing the artist’s battle with Alopecia, and abstract pieces merging her science based background and the oil paint medium.
The Small Works Gallery featured emerging fiber artist Christy Binoniemi whose work surprised me with artisitry I had no idea you could achieve with felt. After experimenting with several felting techniques she has focused her passion on two-dimensional needle felting using wool roving. With this technique she is able to recreate portraits from photographs into her felting art form. Her pieces will remain on display March 4- 28th, 2014. Next weekend Christy will be sharing more of her passion with needle felting by teaching classes for both beginners and advanced downstairs at the Peter White Public Library.
