Saturday night, I went to my first ever Roller Derby. Dead River Derby played against Kingsford Krush in their first home game of the season. They won 266 to Krush’s 79. It was an exciting game that brought many people to the stands of the Lakeview Arena. It was an event for everyone. Beer was being sold at one of the concessions and the kids had free reign over a bouncy castle.

The music was great, and everyone had a great time. Even some of the girls who fell down got up laughing it off. It was an event with friendly competition. During half time, we were introduced to the Marquette’s Junior Roller Derby and the crowd cheered them on as they raced around the track.

In case the fun and good times are not enough to draw you out to a roller derby event… let me not fail to mention that each derby competition donates proceeds to a different local non-profit!. Good fun for good causes you can’t beat that.

I’m not much of a sport person but this is the one exception. I was joined by our Marquette Magazine photojournalist Ron Caspi who was also a newbie to the roller derby scene and claims to have found a new challenge and passion in sports photography within the roller derby. We are excited to support such a great community movement and you can bet we will be at Dead River Derby’s next home game on May 24th at the Lakeview Arena when they face-off against Escanaba!

I'm a college student at NMU studying English and Film. I'm having fun testing my writing skills at Marquette Magazine! Even though I have many passions, I'm always looking for more.
