Life After Graduation
MQTmag intern Roweena Langin shares her plans of life after graduation from NMU spring 2014
Marquette, MI – Another college semester has come to completion and we’d just like to take a moment to congratulate NMU students for making it through to the finish. Especially those doning their caps and gowns tomorrow for the graduation ceremony!
This was a special semester for us at Marquette Magazine as we welcomed our first intern, Roweena Langin to the team! Roweena is a graduating senior from the photography dept. art & design college at NMU this spring and we’ve truly enjoyed having her contributions.
Roweena is looking forward to building a career as a sports photographer from here and incorporated her love of sports shooting with her senior project. “Sports and The People Who Play Them” is the title for her final school project. Instead of printing images to hang on the walls of the gallery Langin went a different direction to convey the purpose of her project by creating a portrait book of athletes from various NMU teams.
“People often associate athletes as players in their sport and fail to see that they also have personal lives outside the activity they are known for. This series was created to display a few athletes’ personal and professional sides to the public, in the hopes that when he or she leaves, they will have found a relatable connection with the athlete.” explains Langin of the purpose behind creating a photo book of her work and with this she has done a great job!
We asked Roweena a few questions about her experience with this project and what she plans to do post graduation:
EM: What was the most personally gratifying element you received in doing your senior project?
RL: It is a great feeling seeing people enjoy my work! During one of the visits to the DeVos I was fortunate enough to witness some boys looking at my book and was able to overhear them talking about it. I was happy to hear that one of the points of this project was working; the boys were talking about recognizing some of the athletes in places outside their sport.
EM: Greatest challenges?
RL: Trying to convince the coaches to help me with the project.
EM: Plans after graduation?
RL: I will continue to intern for Marquette Magazine and start building a network. I would like to shoot sports for a living.
EM: Dream job?
RL: A photographer for an NHL team.
