Michigan: Sweet On My Mind…
A SUMMER ROMANCE AND THE U.P.
As we say goodbye to summer and venture into the cold again, I have to admit I had a summer romance…
It reminded me so much of the summer romances in Michigan. And yes, we drove the Spyder and I blasted Kid Rock, Summertime in northern Michigan, which often created a debate.
“Your home state isn’t even connected!”
“Ok, take Hawaii. Is northern Michigan northern lower peninsula or upper Michigan? Is Maui Hawaii? Ask Kid Rock.”
“No. And you cannot watch Pure Michigan commercials anymore because they make you cry.”
There was something about this summer romance that reminded me of home. Maybe it was the fishing. Maybe it was the quiet peacefulness of sharing stories about home. Maybe it was comparing Traverse Bay to Mallets Bay on a sailboat. Maybe it was how much he reminded me of the boy I made out with on Presque Isle.
It was an escape I needed. My goal to visit home didn’t happen. But my goal to reminisce, remember, and share did. But I think it may have been the fishing.
“Bait shop?”
“No, I’ll go get them from my swamp backyard.”
“You put worms on hooks?”
“No, they just curl up on there. Of course I do and with perfectly manicured nails.”
There was something about the way he said no. It was like nnnnnnno. There was something about our time that brought me home when I couldn’t get there. Nnnnnno, I didn’t make it home. I didn’t get my potato sausage…..
But I did have a fun summer romance. And it ends, like the season ends. And it gets cold. I’m thinking ice-fishing. Winter-time in northern Michigan? Is that the Upper Peninsula or northern Lower Peninsula?
I wish the season hadn’t changed.
