Morgan Falls
For a beautiful and easy to reach waterfall experience!
Marquette, MI – Tucked just off of HWY M-553 across from the Marquette Mountain Ski Hill is a forest gem called Morgan Falls. Just 2 miles south of Marquette these small but enchanting falls cascade down 20 feet before joining with the Carp River.
This is a wonderful waterfall experience to be had with kids and adults who lack the endurance and mobility for long trail hikes. In dry weather you can drive right to the stairs which take you directly to the falls. Make note that in the wet seasons you may need 4 wheel drive to make it all the way to the falls. On the bright side it’s a beautiful and easy walk along the dirt road if you can’t drive all the way in. There are also an abundance of biking trails as the Noquemanon Trail Network runs through this area.
Upon reaching the falls you have two options depending on which side of the river you prefer. Either follow the trail straight down the side of the falls or for the more adventurous you can wade across stream or practice your balancing skills by making a short crossing over logs if you want to stay dry. Once across head downhill on the trail to the bottom of the falls where you’ll find an outcropping of land bordered on either side by the falls and the Carp River.
The kids can wade in the water at the foot of the falls and it makes a great spot for exploration and picnicking. We had trouble getting our kids to leave!
How to get to Morgan Falls:
Head south from Marquette on M-553 towards the Marquette Mountain Ski Hill. Look for an unmarked dirt road on your right just before crossing the Carp River. (It’s called Marquette Mt. Rd. but there is no sign) If you reach the Ski Lodge on your left you have gone to far and upon turning around in their parking lot you will want to take the first left as you head back towards town. Once on the dirt road the falls are about 1.5 miles in. A regular car should be just fine as long as the road is dry. (You can also walk or bike in easily) Look for a small parking area on the left and there is a sign and stairs right next to the parking area. (If you reach a wooden bridge you’ve gone too far) You’ll know what to do from there 😉
