Marquette, MI, Nov. 13, 2013 – Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve Evening of Entertainment – The Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve non-profit organization celebrated their yearly anniversary by combining the annual members meeting with live music and FUNdraising at the Ore Dock Brewing Company Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. The event was being held to raise money for the organizations preservation programs such as water quality, land preservation, the mining campaign, education and outreach. Many talented local artisans donated hand-crafted items to the silent auction as well as museum quality collectors pieces from native traditions across the states and Finland.  Other activities of the night included live entertainment, a photo contest, and raffle. This was a fantastic community event put together with much love and gratitude

In case you’ve never heard of the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve let me tell you a little bit about this important local U.P. organization.  This is a small grassroots group that is doing big work to help preserve and protect a portion of our local watershed for the benefit of present and future generations (as written in their mission statement).  They are committed to protecting our largest resource in the Upper Peninsula, our water! Using science, community engagement, education, outreach and advocacy they are watchdogs for local water resources.

The Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve is based out of Big Bay, MI and their preservation efforts are specifically focused on the Yellow Dog River, the Salmon Trout River, and Lake Independence, all found in the stretch of Upper Peninsula between Marquette and Big Bay. Stream and lake monitoring, wetland restoration, and political advocacy for preservation make up the majority of their activities. If you’re interested in finding out more about their preservation programs and how you can get involved you can visit their website: yellowdogwatershed.org    and stay tuned here at Marquette Magazine for our upcoming feature story about the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve.
